Around 1500 patients every year benefit from this screening service, which is based in the Wolfson Diabetes and Endocrine Unit. Diabetic retinopathy is the UK's leading cause of blindness among people of working age. Retinal screening helps ensure that people with diabetes can have their eyes checked regularly for signs of deterioration before it starts to adversely affect their vision.
