Papworth Hospital projects

PORTICO

Yesterday Media Studio delivered a short film on Papworth Hospital's PORTICO project, to be screened at a showcase event in London today. This project has been funded by the Health Foundation and the end of project evaluation event required the inclusion of a short video. It features Mr Pedro Catarino, Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon, Dr Nicola Jones,Consultant in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia & Intensive Care and Michael DeBranco, who was the first patient in the PORTICO trial.

PORTICO stands for Preparing and Optimising patients and Reducing Trauma In Cardiac Operations. By focusing on lifestyle changes that patients make, taking steps to reduce the trauma of surgery and mobilising patients early, Papworth Hospital has made significant improvements to recovery times for patients, allowing them to go home earlier and helping to minimise post-surgical complications.

Road to Recovery
Media Studio recently delivered 700 copies of the DVD, 'Road to Recovery', which is an exercise video given to cardiac surgery patients to help and encourage a safe level of healthy exercise as part of their recovery.

Why choose Papworth
Our short video giving a glimpse of life at Papworth Hospital has pride of place on the Hospital's website. Dan Saxton, Marketing Manager for Papworth Hospital, said:
We worked with Andrew to create an introduction video to our hospital. Andrew was a pleasure to work with, he got some fantastic shots and worked with staff to make them feel at ease before filming. The final video was finished to excellent standard and we are all very happy with the result.'

Cardiac surgery enhanced recovery programme
We're currently editing a patient information DVD for people who are preparing for major cardiac surgery. Enhanced recovery is a key feature of Papworth's approach to ensuring that patients are as well prepared as possible to undergo major surgery and that they do everything possible to bring about a safe and speedy recovery. The DVD gives both information and advice for patients, which they can use before as well as after their operation. This will be the third enhanced recovery film made for Papworth Hospital patients by Media Studio – the two we made previously for patients with malignant and benign lung disease have been making a difference to patients' lives now for over a year. We were pleased to be Awarded a Silver Award for them in the 2013 Institute of Medical Illustrators Annual Awards.

The new hospital
We thoroughly enjoy working with the Communications team at Papworth Hospital and so were delighted to hear that the Hospital had finally been given the go-ahead to move to the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.  Construction is planned to start at the end of this year.
