Newly certified photographers for Diabetic Eye Screening

Two Media Studio medical photographers, Peter Murray and Emily Wells, have recently successfully completed a national qualification in Diabetic Eye Screening (Imaging). This qualification is required to perform retinal photography screening of patients in the Addenbrooke’s Diabetes clinic that are uploaded to a regional centre for grading for early signs of diabetic retinopathy (DR).  The screening is performed on a digital retinal camera system connected via a NHS networked eye screening application to the grading centre.

DR is a major complication of diabetes and is potentially sight-threatening. Early detection of DR during screening enables a prompt referral to Ophthalmology for treatment to prevent loss of sight. The Media Studio now has seven medical photographers qualified to perform this screening, and contributes to the early detection of diabetic eye disease.
